BROWN HEADS
The ceramic Moor heads of Caltagirone are one of the symbols of Sicily, their history is rooted in the tradition and folklore of the island. The myth from which they originate is a story of love, passion and… revenge.
The man and woman depicted by tradition share a tragic destiny and an overwhelming passion. Legend tells of a Sicilian girl who fell in love, reciprocated, with a Moro soldier. Discovering that the soldier already had a family, he killed him in his sleep and used his head as a vase for the basil on his balcony. The plant grew lush and even the envious neighbors began to have head-shaped vases made. From that moment, the Moor’s Heads became a true symbol of passion and love.
Another version, however, tells of the clandestine relationship between a girl of noble origins and a young Moor. Soon, their forbidden love was discovered and punished with the beheading of both of them. The heads of the young lovers were transformed into vases and displayed on a balcony as a warning against any other unseemly passion.
This latest version of the legend is the one that inspired our collections of dark brown heads, with a thought for the couples who, in history and mythology, they tried to live an impossible love.
